Specific jobs needed to run swim meets are as follows:

  • Timers: Each dual meet requires 18 or 24 timers: three per lane for six- or eight-lane pools. Each team provides half of the timers, 9 or 12 depending on whether the pool has six or eight lanes. Stop watches are provided. Timers can be relieved halfway through the meet, so a couple or two friends can cover one timer “slot.” The host club provides a Head Timer who coordinates the activities of the timers.
  • Table Workers: The scorers’ table consists of the following jobs:
    • An Announcer who announces the events and score to keep the meet running smoothly, and on whose cue the officials operate.
    • A Chief Judge whose responsibility it is to receive the time cards of the swimmers and place them in order from first to third.
    • A Recorder who writes times and places on the heat sheet and checks times with the chief judge.
    • Two Scorers (one from each team) who keep a running score, and provide the announcer with the score after a designated number of events.
    • Ribbon Writers who do the important job of writing our children’s ribbons.
  • Table worker roles are evolving and changing to computer-operator roles as CCSDA clubs adopt new record-keeping and timing technology.
  • Runners: Each meet requires two to three adults who transfer swimmers’ event entry cards from the start end of the pool to the finish end, and from the finish to the scoring table.
  • Meet Officials: These individuals attend training sessions run by CCSDA or other authorized organizations and are certified to work in their respective capacities. Training sessions are required each season and are offered before the start of the season.
    • The Referee is responsible for the conduct of each meet, resolving disputes, providing adequate officials and timers, and making sure meet officials conduct themselves in a proper manner. The home team provides the Referee.
    • The Starter is responsible for starting the swimmers off the blocks and watching for false starts. The guest team provides the Starter.
    • Stroke and Turn Judges make sure all strokes and turns abide by league rules. Each club provides two stroke and turn judges for each dual meet.

There are many other ways for parents to become involved. So volunteer! Really, it’s pretty fun!
